JJMS has a Parent
Council that meets several times a year to solicit parent partnership to
solve areas of mutual concern. In the
2005-6 school year, the PTA held a fundraiser for PE
equipment. In 2006-7, The PTA took on
student drop off/pick up procedures, sex education, cyberbullying
and other topics that impact student achievement. In 2007-08 parents are focusing on
fundraising strategies as well as how to motivate students and their
parents. Parents are asked to give 15
hours of service to the school. In the
2005-6 school year, parents painted walls, assembled furniture and covered
textbooks. They also chaperoned dances
and went on field trips. Parents are
required to attend at least two face-to-face meetings with their child’s
teacher during each school year. In
2006-7, parents were offered a series of workshops on subjects that will
impact their child’s future. The first
workshop is on money management with an emphasis on paying for college. In the 2007-08 school year,
with funding from the Nell Soto grant program, parent workshops will be
offered on a monthly basis with a range of topics pertinent to the parents,
such as A-G requirements. Each grade level
has an elected parent representative.
The parents also choose one of the grade representatives to sit on the
JJMS Board of Trustees. In 2006-7,
the 8th grade rep was elected to serve as the parent vote on the
Board of Trustees. |
