OUR MISSION
James Jordan Middle School is dedicated to preparing all students for admission
to a four year university. We believe that in the right environment, creative
and committed teachers can provide the support that brings all students up to
grade level. Our goal is to create a truly integrated school with at least 51%
underserved minority students.
INSTRUCTIONAL APPROACH
Curriculum planning is conducted using the Backwards Design Model. Teachers of
the same content work together to create a common semester exam based on state
standards. Then, they work backwards to set the pacing plan. Each teacher can
make independent choices about daily instruction as long as the students are
prepared for the common exams. We expect our faculty to use a wide variety of
teaching activities with a definite preference for student-centered active lessons.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
Our professional development program is built into our weekly schedule. On Friday
afternoons, students go to their art electives and the teachers have 3 hours to
work together. Teachers share student work and discuss what would improve student
achievement. The teachers and principal work together to set the agendas and select
workshops and trainings.
THE CHARTER DIFFERENCE
Teaching at a charter school is an experience very different from service in
district school. There is little bureaucracy and few restrictions on the methods
you can employ to increase student performance. With a very small faculty, there
is a sense of family amongst the staff. We encourage teachers to design innovative
learning projects and to propose specialized approaches to instruction. There is
also a different set of expectations. Every one here pitches in when there is a
need. We all take the initiative to find new resources for our students. Principal,
teachers, parents and students all participate in fundraising, grant writing and
other ways to enrich the school experience. We deeply respect the need for a rich
and balanced life outside of school, but at a charter school everyone goes the extra mile.
